Experimental data are presented from a study of the focusing of single, submicrosecond pressure pulses in water. The effects of the initial amplitude distribution, the initial pressure level, and the geometric parameters of the opto-acoustic concentrator are studied. It is found that the focusing efficiency can be substantially enhanced by going from a bell-shaped distribution of the initial amplitude to an annular distribution.
