The magnitudes of dipole moments and the molar Kerr constants for two cyanophenyl and two cyanobiphenyl esters of different 1,3-dioxanecarboxylic acids were determined. Polar and electrooptical properties of the mesomorphous compounds studied were compared with similar liquid crystals containing other five-and six-membered rings in the acid residue of ester molecules. It was shown that the inclusion of the 1,3-dioxane cycle in the molecular structure in order to increase the longitudinal component of the total dipole moment makes it possible to synthesize liquid crystals with highly efficient dipole and electrooptic characteristics.
