Possible approaches to the definition of the concept of critical micelle concentration (CMC) in terms of the chemical potential, activity, and activity coefficient of surfactants are examined. Based on the law of mass action and an ideal associated model, 13 definitions of the degree of micellar aggregation based on the corresponding CMC were compared. The application of general definitions to the formation of small molecular associates was discussed.
