The necessary conditions for the internal and external stability of a heterogeneous system containing surfaces and linear boundaries have been formulated. A generalization of the Gibbs-Curie principle has been given, and the role of linear phenomenon in two-dimensinal phase transitions and wetting has been examined on its basis. Cases of the external instability of internally stable systems with curved boundaries have been discussed.
