The potential for time compression of ultraintense laser pulses in plasma based on nonlinear interactions between waves during backward stimulated Raman scattering is analyzed analytically and numerically. The optimal conditions for obtaining a maximal energy conversion coefficient of 10-ps laser pulses to the energy of 100-fs Stokes pulses are found.
