title = "Atlas and catalogue of the living mollusks of the Aral and Caspian Seas",
abstract = "The Aral and Caspian Seas belong to the group of the World{\textquoteright}slargest brackish water basins that are characterized by a longgeological history and unique biota, including a rich anddiverse fauna of mollusks (bivalves and gastropods). Thoughthe history of scientific exploration of the Aralo-Caspian malacofaunacan be traced back to the end of the 18th century, thereis still a lack of a comprehensive and illustrated survey of Molluscaof these two sea basins. The book provides an annotatedinventory of the recent Bivalvia and Gastropoda of the Araland Caspian Sea, with their synonymy, notes on ecology anddistribution, and images of shells (including numerous imagesof type specimens – holotypes, lectotypes, syntypes, etc.). Anextensive overview of the physical geographical conditions ofthe two basins as well as their geological history is providedalongside with an outline of the historical development of theirmalacofaunas. The systematic part contains a description of thefauna, represented in the Aral Sea by two species of Gastropodaand seven species of Bivalvia, and in the Caspian Sea by 33–34 species of Bivalvia and 63 species of Gastropoda. Theseestimates, however, are of provisional character only, sincethe high level of taxonomic uncertainty makes it impossibleto determine exactly the actual number of living species.A special discussion is devoted to the drastic degradation ofthe Aralo-Caspian malacofauna in the former century, whichwas caused primarily by the anthropogenic destruction of theaquatic environment and inflow of alien molluscan species",
