N2 - The Arctic region, despite its harsh climate, is a home to more than 21, 000 species. Yet rapid climate change and increased interest in Arctic resources negatively impact unique fauna and flora of the area, and one of the key areas of impact is avian biodiversity in the region. In order to combat negative effects, the Arctic Council established Arctic Migratory Birds Initiative (AMBI). The project aims to maintain avian biodiversity and encourage sustainable development in the Arctic. This research paper provides a comprehensive overview of the AMBI as a project and attempts to explore the capacity of the Arctic Council to be an agent of positive change through this project. After close examination of the AMBI’s structure and activities in the region, the question could be answered affirmatively, since Council’s efforts in protecting avian diversity through AMBI’s work in the region were relatively successful.
