We analyze the applicability of the separation of variables method to non-spherical particles. Using a spherical basis, this method reduces the electrostatic problem to an infinite system of linear equations. We examine the asymptotic behavior of the matrix elements and find the necessary condition of solvability of the system. The analysis is supported by special numerical calculations of the element asymptotics as well as of the T-matrix, polarizability, etc.
