The mineralization types, metal zonation and morphology of the deformed and metamorphosed massive Zn-Cu-Pb sulphide deposit at Ankarvattnet are presented. These features are compared with a theoretically-deformed (pure shear, simple shear and combined pure and simple shear) generalized volcanogenic model associated with felsic calc-alkalic volcanism; data for this model have been derived from descriptions of Precambrian Canadian and Tertiary Japanese (Kuroko) massive sulphide deposits. The gross similarity between an inverted Ankarvattnet succession and the deformation model suggests an inverted stratigraphy in the vicinity of Ankarvattnet. A 'volcanogenic' formation model, with ore deposition at or near the sediment-water interface with an underlying stringer zone is suggested, although no volcanic strata occur in the vicinity of Ankarvattnet. The occurrence of basaltic high-level intrusives near to the ore is, however, considered significant in this respect. - G.R.
