This article examines sonnet II by the sixteenth-century French poet Louise Labé in comparison with the “paired” sonnet by her alleged lover, Olivier de Magny (the quatrains of both sonnets are identical). Which of these sonnets was written first? Is Labé's sonnet a cry from the heart, to which Magny replied, or a parody of Magny's sonnet? The definite answer to these questions seems to be impossible, but an analysis of the text of Labé's sonnet allows us to formulate a hypothesis.
