The paper gives the analysis of the scientific creativity of Yu. G. Alekseev. The main attention is paid to the consideration of the character, methods, and ways of using historical sources in his works. The questions of paleographic analysis of texts in the works of the historian, approaches of the researcher to sources from the point of view of reliability and completeness of the factual data reported by the sources are considering.
