This paper delivered at round-table discussion «Aristocracy through historical perspective» is a contribution to the investigation of Early Stuart aristocracy origin. Stressing the importance of long-term changes in late Medieval and Early Modem government, the author underlines a new context of relationship between Jacobean monarchy and titled nobility. In the beginning of the 17 century all the three orders were influenced by the king's service and only those nobles who were involved in office holding had access to decision-making procedure and so were regarded as aristocracy. 364
