A critical review is given of experimental research into the so-called "slow light" effect arising from the anomalously steep refractive index dispersion under conditions of electromagnetically induced transparency or coherent population oscillations. It is shown that much of the experimental evidence for the effect has no relation to the anomalously low group velocity of light in the medium and is readily interpreted in standard terms of light fields interactin
