In this publication for the first time in historiography considers the concept of "the West" as "the other" in the pages of the socio-political magazine "Otechestvennye Zapiski" in 1857-1870. This work presents an innovative attempt to examine the concept of the West in the context of disputes about Russia, which were conducted by the intellectual elite in the epoch of Great reforms.
