Genetic diversity and colonization routes of Europe by three-spined stickleback were studied using a sequence of the mitochondrial cyt b gene. While migrating westwards along the ancient Tethys Ocean, the three-spined stickleback colonized the modern Mediterranean Basin. The passing the strait of Gibraltar area allowed the species to colonize eventually the Northern Europe and Northern America.
