Kagawa Toyohiko (1888-1960) is considered to be one of the most famous Japanese outside Japan. He is often called devoted fighter for the world peace, St. Francis of Japan, defender of the rights of the poor and deprived. In advance of the WWII Japanese government thought Kagawa to be a dangerous insurgent, confusing the people with his pacifist ideas. Kagawa worked out his own specific life philosophy that focused on the active Christian love, permanent help to the miserable and poor, and attempts to combine Christianity with science, to settle it on a concrete economic basis that could help to change the world and attain peaceful and worthful life for all the people. The article aims at analyzing the life and thought of Kagawa Toyohiko that exercised great influence upon not only on the followers of his philosophy in Japan, but also upon his numerous admirers in the West.
