The paper discusses the problems of the internal political struggle in the Republic of Moldova in 1991-2019. It is shown that independent Moldova is in search of its own path of development and determination of its place in Europe. One part of Moldovan society seeks to integrate into the European Union and enter Romania; the other part focuses on close cooperation with the Eurasian Economic Union and Russia. The situation is complicated by the interference of external forces and the consequences of the armed conflict in Transnistria, which led to the split into the industrial left bank of the Dniester and its agricultural right bank. The approximate equality of the opposing forces led to political instability and economic stagnation. The weakness of the state structures promoted the oligarch V. Plahotniuc, who took control of the parliament and government of Moldova. In the presidential election in 2016, socialist I. Dodon won, taking a course towards restoring ties with Russia. The parliamentary elections of 2019 resulted in equal votes for the supporters of European integration, V. Plahotniuc's party and Socialists.
