The Wutaishan Mountains are described in a new book by Isabelle Charleux mostly as a place of destination for Mongol pilgrims. «Nomads on Pilgrimage: Mongols on Wutaishan (China), 1800-1940» is both a scholarly study and a collection of related materials obtained from written sources and fieldwork. While Wutaishan is located in China proper it is also a major centre of Tibetan Buddhism and it has large temples staffed by Mongol lamas. Traditionally these temples have been supported by Mongol nobles and common pilgrims. It has numerous holy objects such as Buddha's footprints, caves and significant images. These significant features, as well as its overall reputation as a sacred place, have attracted for centuries Mongol pilgrims who come to pray and worship and sometimes bury the remains of their relatives. Readers will find substantial information about every temple and holy site in Wutaishan in this book which is supplemented with many photos, old and new, as well as maps and images of traditional paintings. In general, the substantial and comprehensive nature of this work ensures that it will become a standard book of reference on the topic of Mongol Buddhists at Wutaishan in the pre-modern period.
