The article is devoted to the study of the limits of independence of the diplomat of the era of the Italian Wars Niccolo Machiavelli in the execution of his mission in 1505 to Perugia. The urgency of the problem is connected with the interest of modern science in the diplomatic history of the Italian wars. Having studied this mission of Machiavelli, the author concludes about the success of the Florentine in terms of independent conduct of diplomatic dialogue.
