Based on satellite altimeter data, the level change rates are calculated from the integral continuity equation for full flux divergence. A frontal zone is a convergence zone (increasing rate of the level change), but a front is a maximum convergence contour. Inter-year and seasonal variability of the position and intensity of frontal zones in the Japan and Okhotsk Seas is discussed.
