St. Petersburg, as a military fortress and the capital of the young Empire of Russian Tsar Peter the Great, needed a permanent military garrison to repel enemy attacks. Subsequently, it was the Imperial Guard that became the garrison of the young military capital after the Peter's royal court moved to this city. For the Guards regiments in the city of Petersburg, the best architects of their time built the entire architectural ensembles, the scope of which influenced not only the structure, but also the toponymy of Old Petersburg. The military barracks town of the of the Semenovsky Guard Regiment became the first complex of stone barracks in the city at the beginning of the XIX-th century and has largely survived till now. Later, the Jaeger Guard Regiment was also located in the space of this complex.
