Marguerite de Valois attracted the attention of the authors of the mid-19th century both as a historical figure connecting with the dramatic events in the history of France and as a legendary conqueror of men's hearts, which created the opportunity for uniting a historical story line with a romance to overcome “the fatal fault” of works by W. Scott, which in the mid-19th century opinion, was either unwillingness or inability to depict love passion (Stendhal, Balzac, Belinsky, Thackeray). The article is devoted to the comparative analysis of Marguerite's images in the romances by A. Dumas-père and W. Ainsworth. Both “La Reine Margot” and “Crichton” are marked with the author's intention to depict impartially the age of the religious wars in the 16th-century France.
