The article defines actual and hypothetical threats caused by malicious use of artificial intelligence for Hong
Kong and Taiwan - zones with a high potential for political destabilization in the Asia-Pacific region. The research is
based on the method of comparative analysis (case-study). The cases analyzed demonstrate that the realities of malicious
use of artificial intelligence in the regions are fundamentally different – for Taiwan, the main strategies aimed at the
automated dissemination of misleading information, while in Hong Kong they are limited to disrupting the of
communication channels through automated cyberattacks. These features are due to the nature of domestic political
activity in the regions and their place in the mainland China political agenda. The prospects for the malicious use of
artificial intelligence also differ in the regions - for example, in Taiwan, the prospect of developing artificial intelligence
to generate false news materials seems likely, while in Hong Kong, the development of artificial intelligence that generates
deepfakes or monitors the behavior of protesters is more likely.
