Consuming more than a third of the produced fuel, thermal power plants can have a significant impact on both the environment in the area of their location and on the biosphere as a whole. Particular danger to the environment is posed by thermal power plants that use solid fuel as a source of energy. It is well known that solid fuels combustion produces ash and slag wastes. Storage of these wastes in ash dumps is associated with abandoning the significant land areas and adverse environmental effects. The study was aimed at ecological assessment of the state of environmental components in the area affected by CHPP and ash dump (Pervomayskaya СHPP, Kirovsky District, Saint-Petersburg).

The reconnaissance survey resulted in a map with the points of ash and slag waste recovered back to the surface, which is necessary for developing a sampling network for soils at further stages of the study.
