The paper deals with different theoretical approaches to discourse markers as linguistic units fulfilling various functions in scientific discourse, brings to light their characteristics and peculiarities of functioning. The author of the article also carries out a review of the usage of scientific style paratext discourse markers — author's preface to linguistic monographs — separated out on the basis of their functions.
