Nothingness as something ineff inexpressible in words proves to be the core of the lyrics of such authors as Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Rainer Maria Rilke, Ingeborg Bachmann, Paul Celan, Friederike Mayröcker. They all try to do the impossible, that is to verbalize, at least vaguely, what actually does not exist - the emptiness. The purpose of the present article is to explore the means by which writers manage to introduce into literary works the element of ultimate mystery; this may help us to better understand the heritage of the two leading German poets of the XXth century - Rilke and Celan.
