Hydroponic technologies are widely used in many countries. A global trend in recent
years is the development of closed-type plant factories, for which the conditions of
mineral nutrition, along with the lighting mode, considered as the most important and
easily controlled factors of the environment, ensuring a high and top-quality crop. In this
regard, the emphasis is made on the fact that the absorption of basic nutrients by plants,
which is especially important for technologies with a closed system of mineral nutrition,
occurs at different rates. Namely, nitrate, ammonium, potassium and phosphate ions are
absorbed much faster than magnesium, sulfate, and calcium ions, which can lead to
dilution of the solution in some ions and concentration in others. Although information
on advances in crop management and improving the chemical composition of plants
based on modification of mineral nutrition regime in hydroponics is still very limited,
some of the proposed strategies can be discussed. These are: differentiation of the nutrient
solution composition in accordance with the phases of plant growth to achieve a higher
yield; use of the «nutrient stress» method to increase the yield of a number of crops; use
of the «mass balance» principle when correcting solutions in a closed cycle of mineral
nutrition; minimizing the concentration of nutrient solutions and reducing the level of
nitrate in them in order to increase the yield of biologically active secondary metabolites
in the leaves of green and spicy-aromatic plants. It concludes that improving the strategy
of mineral nutrition of plants in hydroponic culture is undoubtedly a promising direction
for obtaining high-quality plant products with an increased yield of useful compounds
that meet the physiological and dietary needs of humans.
