N2 - The article uses the methods developed in the framework of the «Law in Literature» section and analyses the legal theme in the novel «I Am Not Pan Jinlian» by the world-famous contemporary Chinese writer Liu Zhenyun. It is concluded that the legal plots outlined in the novel, which is translated into Russian, can complement the picture of the legal life of modern mainland China, along with scientific works and texts of normative legal acts. The plot of the novel is the search for justice by the main character. The article emphasises the legal aspects of the novel by analysing the plot of the case and the legal grounds for the heroine's applying to the court, and carries out the analyses of the PRC legislative acts. As the book's narration develops the activities of many officials and state institutions of the PRC (judicial authorities, county governor, mayor, the national People's Congress, party leaders) fall into the spotlight. The plot of the novel is built around one divorce case, but the storyline allows us to draw some conclusions about the practical activities ofjudicial institutions, government bodies, and party structures in China. The actions and reflections of the characters described in the novel introduce the legal awareness of the modern Chinese society. At the same time, it should be kept in mind that the novel sets out a satirical model, not a realistic depiction of the state-legal reality of the PRC.
