The article is devoted to the picture "Allegory of Painting" ("The atelier of artist") by the 17th century Dutch artist Jan Vermeer. The author focuses on the problem of the iconography of this and other pictures by Vermeer. Stylistic tendencies of Delft painting are considered and works by Vermeer and his contemporaries are studied. The author draws a conclusion about connections between subject of the picture and allegories in the painting of the 17th century.
