The present study is focused on the linguistic means of the verbal etiquette of address in Anglo-Norman in the English chivalric romances of 13–15 centuries. The evolvement of forms expressing politeness in the medieval English society is regarded in the context of the historical and social processes underlying the interplay of the Anglo-Saxon tradition and the Norman-French courtly culture in the elaboration of speech formulas of the etiquette communication.
