The response of the German sociological community to the German edition of P. Sorokin’s Sociology of Revolution (1928) is a notable but unexplored fact in the history of sociology. This book was first criticized in Germany in a review by the famous Weimar sociologist Hanna Meuter (1889–1964) for its American edition (1925). Pitirim Sorokin supplemented the German edition with foreword where he addresses to readers. This contributed to the emergence of an interested professional discussion in the German sociological community about the methodology of researching the revolution. The article considers three journal reviews of Sorokin’s book, written by sociologists of the Max Weber’s methodological orientation: N. von Bubnoff, A. Meusel, E. Jenny, who expressed critical assessments that have theoretical and methodological significance. It is important to pay attention not only to the general assessment of the contribution of P. Sorokin to the formation of the sociology of revolution as a scientific direction, but also to show the remarks presented in each of the reviews. Thus, turning to the materials of the reviews shows how criticism deepens the analysis of the theoretical foundations of the research. It is proved that the critical remarks of German authors were considered by P. Sorokin in his second edition of the book Leaves from a Russian Diary (1950). In addition, the article provides arguments confirming that the German criticism of the methodology of the Sociology of Revolution became a factor that accelerated P. Sorokin’s break with the theory of collective reflexology by V. Bekhterev in his further studies of the cultural dynamic of society. The article includes historical and biographical facts confirming the recognition of Pitirim Sorokin in the German sociological community as a theoretical scientist.
