An analysis of thirty years of teaching political science in Russia is based on the methodological recommendations of foreign and Russian authors. The main thesis of the author is that the system of teaching political science disciplines that has been formed over three decades in Russian education is extremely inefficient and rather bad than useful and vital for the state and society. The article argues that the level of political education of Russians is extremely low, and political education excluded from Russian practice has not yet been replaced by a complete civic education system; the school course in social science does not allow us to provide the necessary level of democratic political culture among the country's population. Among the most serious problems are indicated: the initial vagueness of determining the goal of teaching the discipline «Political Science», which causes students to reject and doubt employers about its need for training specialists; extremely vague wording of formed competencies and methods for their verification; lack of unified ideas about the fundamental nature of political science knowledge in the Russian pedagogical community; duplication of the content of this knowledge at different levels of students training; the practice of replacement the discipline«Political Science» from the curriculum of universities, which helps to strengthen the technocratic trend in the country; lagging of the applied approaches and methods of teaching political science at all levels from the rapidly changing needs and capabilities of students; a center-oriented system for managing the process of political science education, especially the distribution of budget places, and finally, not a very high level of professionalism of the teaching staff. The author claims that superficiality in the teaching of a political science disciplines often leads to the formation of students not knowledge, but only opinions, which contributes to the development of conformism and concludes that the higher the level of political education among the country's population, the greater the chances for democracy.
