Alexander Sergeyevich Dargomyzhsky ranks among the well-known classic composers of Russianиmusic. His biography and works have been closely studied, and his works (including certain volumes from the Complete Works) edited by such eminent scholars as Nikolai Findeyzen, Mikhail Pekelis, Pavel Lamm and others. His letters and literary works, both complete and unabridged as well as fragments from newspapers and journals of the second half of the 19th century, were published in 1921 (compiled by Findeyzen) and 1952 (compiled by Pekelis). These publications today remain invaluable but scarce rarities. No complete literary and epistolary heritage for Dargomyzhsky exists, which is a significant obstacle to the further study of his life and works. The implementation of the project The Complete Literary Works and Letters of A. S. Dargomyzhsky will contribute to a better understanding of the composer's ideas about the musical culture of his time, his milieu, his relationships with his correspondents, and the psychology of his creative process. The epistolary discourse highlights Dargomyzhsky's individual peculiarities and captures elements of his inner world.
