The descendants of the Tivertsy, Uliches, and Khorvats founded the Galician Principality, played an important role in the creation of the Old Russian state and nation and in the ethno-genesis of the Ukrainian, Polish, Hungarian, Moldavian and Romanian peoples. A part of the Old Russian population of Carpatho-Rus', despite living in inter-confessional and multi-linguistic surroundings, henceforth was able to preserve its ethno-cultural identity and its own designation "Rusin". This presents an opportunity to study the history of the formation of the given community and its economic structure. The mention in the Russian Chronicles of the Tivertsy as "Who are tolvoviny" and "Galician vygontsy" demonstrate the type of activity the population of the given region was involved in, that is herding (toloka and vygon both refer to pasturing). Eventually, because of the commonality of the economic structure and also the Orthodox faith, this led to peaceful contact with the Vlachs and a compatible "Valachian colonization". The word "Volokh" (Vlakh, Valakh), along with ethnic belonging, also indicated the activity of herding. Later, cattle breeding played a major role in the Moldavian Principality, where the Rusins comprised a significant part of the population, of Galician Rus'.
