The article examines the evolution of skansens – open-air museums and the
emergence of a new type of museum as an international phenomenon. Basic approaches adopted by
International Council of Museums and Association of European Open-air Museums are analysed.
The research explores the development trends of largest museums in the Post-Soviet space with
common Soviet past, which create the image of a republics, in context of the modern cultural policy
of Georgia, Ukraine, Belarus and Baltic States.
