the article gives the analysis of irony as a way of representing the British mentality
in English media texts. In consideration of the accepted linguistic and cultural approaches to irony and its functions, two types of the viewed phenomenon are identified – as a trope and a category of the comic. Based on the articles of the Guardian, linguistic and stylistic ways of production of irony as a trope and a category of the comic are revealed, and their pragmatic significance is represented.
