The article reviews examples of the Old Turkic writings from the 6th until the 15th century, i.e. since the inception of Turkic (Runic) writing until the adoption of Arabic graphics. The impact of ethno-cultural and ethno-confessional factors on the emergence and development of Old Turkic (Old Uyghur) writing is discussed.
