The historical novel recreates the past, but its truth is not limited to the accuracy of the facts and the accuracy of the dates. The artist has the right to change or invent facts, to date them in his own way. The main thing for him is the philosophical and historical idea, the general color of the epoch, and not the formal, pedantic precision of the details. In his works, Dumas truly reflects the spirit of the era, but like all other authors of historical novels, it does not always follow the truth of the fact. It is interesting to trace what kind of anachronisms and deviations from the empirical truth are found in his novels, and what are the reasons these derogations caused.
