The article examines the role of Saint-Petersburg in the development of the North-West region as well as the European part of the Russian Arctic at various historical stages. The authors highlights the importance of the transit-transport infrastructure based on Saint-Petersburg for the development of the economic space of the North-West and Russia as a whole. Critical consideration is given to possible models of economic development of the Arctic Russian sector basing on Saint-Petersburg.
