The phenomenon of sound-symbolism is tackled in this article from the standpoint of psycholinguistics; presented here are the results of the study of the recognition by Russian-speaking subjects of their native and foreign (English) words. It can be claimed with a high degree of statistical verity that the phonetic motivation of a linguistic sign not only does not facilitate its visual recognition, but in fact complicates it.
