Russia is a country with a rich centuries-old history, however, at present, there are serious problems with popularizing the history of the Great Patriotic War among young people. One of the popularization tools may be the use of interactive web maps, which are popular among a wide range of users: from specialists to ordinary people. In addition, the number of advanced technologies, along with web mapping, includes spatial modeling of objects. At the same time, there is a lack of methods for integrating the results of spatial object modeling into interactive web maps, although the results of such integration can play a significant role in popularizing the history of the Great Patriotic War. The purpose of this work is to analyze the stages of development of technologies and applied solutions that integrate the processes of web mapping and spatial modeling of objects to create an interactive web map. This analysis is based on existing technological schemes for creating interactive web maps and spatial models, user-oriented design ideas, as well as the authors’ personal experience in developing interactive web maps. The technological scheme includes: collecting the necessary information and obtaining data to fill the resource, developing a cartographic and mathematical basis, filling an interactive web map, configuring the parameters of the visual representation and display of objects on an interactive web map, placing the created spatial model of the object on a platform that supports WebGL technology, creating and configuring the parameters of the visual representation of characteristics of the object, the design of the final form of the interactive web map. The results of the analysis of the stages of technology development open up new opportunities for integrating spatial models into the web mapping process in order to popularize historical information. Using the example of the interactive web map “Memorials of the Leningrad Blockade and the Green Belt of Glory” developed by them, the authors clearly demonstrated the implementation of technological stages within the framework of the project, and also emphasized the features of using the WebGL platform to demonstrate the results of spatial modeling on an interactive web map. © 2025 Lomonosov Moscow State University.
