The paper addresses axiological aspects of British and American art discourse, drawing on the evidence from media reviews on recent exhibitions of Soviet photography in Europe and the USA. Focussing on the diversity of the evaluative meanings attached to the core discourse-building concepts ARTIST, WORK OF ART and STATE, the study postulates the central role of the art critic as a mediator between Soviet photographic art and the modern Western audiences.
