The article is devoted to the investigation of the creative method of a classical writer of American literature of the XX century Eudora Welty, who is considered to be a representative of the Southern literary tradition in the American literature. It is shown that her creative method combines psychological analysis with lyricism, grotesque and symbolism which are embodied in the novel «Optimist’s Daughter».
