The article reconstructs based on archival sources and publications the biography of the Russian philologist, archaeologist and historian of ancient art of German origin -Ludolf Eduard Stefani. From 1850, L. E. Stephani served in St. Petersburg as the keeper of classical antiquities of the Imperial Hermitage, and brought Russian classical studies a lot of practical benefi ts, but did not produced a signifi cant impact on their development.
