N2 - Iodine is one the components traditionally obtained from groundwater. Russia has great reserves of iodine-rich water, and iodine is in high demand. However, there is only one iodine-producing plant in Russia and its output is insufficient to meet the growing market demand. Russian organizations actively develop exploration projects for exploitation of iodine resources both in Russia and other CIS countries. Turkmenistan increases iodine output. It is planned that this country will take the third place in the world on iodine production by 2010. Belarus invests considerable sums of money in industrially valuable water utilization, particulary, in oilfield water processing, to launch iodine production.
