It is argued that the do ut des principle played an important role when Alexander the Great's cults were introduced in the Greek cities of Asia Minor: establishing a close relationship with the Macedonian king and pleasing him, the citizens intended to receive from him in turn some benefits in the future, first of allin theformof various privileges and favours. Besides, therearereasons to believethatthe introduction of Alexander's cults in these communities was also caused by a sense of gratitude for their liberation by the Macedonian king from the power of Persia and pro-Persian local regimes and, in addition, for the general and particular benefactions which were given by him to the cities.
