Alexander Dumas is best known as the author of historical novels, but his work is not limited to this genre. The author manifested himself in the most diverse fields of literature. He wrote numerous plays, short stories, novels, travelogues, historical works, especially in the genre of fictionalized biography, and a cookbook. He appeals to both the history of Europe, especially France, and to the present. But no matter how different from each other works of the writer, all of them are united by very serious approach to the work of the author. The article is devoted to the different stages of creation by Alexandre Dumas and its evolution from drama to historical prose, the analysis of his works and writing techniques, identifying the main trends of the works of the author. The most important features of his personal writing style is a thorough knowledge of the historical factography, the widespread use of memoirs sources. Historical thinking is a kind of selection of numerous critical and sometimes conflicting sources. Dumas carefully collected the smallest details relating to the era. For his works, whether it was a novel or a historical chronicle, the author used a huge amount of a variety of sources, and studied them carefully analyzed and applied skillfully, selecting the most plausible and specific episodes, brightly reflecting the spirit of the age. He was helped to by his excellent memory, a deep understanding of the history and historical intuition, which he repeatedly proved in various areas of his activity.
