Marriage satisfaction is supposed to be one of the main parts of psychological well-being. The feature of the study is the object - a married couple instead of individual person. In this particular case, we are observing a heterosexual couple. It allows us to examine certain aspects of marriage by perception of gender characteristics. The aim of this research was examining the relationship between satisfaction in marriage and the proximity of cross representations of spouses. Otherwise we examined the differences between men and women ability to make a correct image of a spouse. Subject. Gender features of spouse representation and its relations with marriage satisfaction. Participants. The study involved 36 heterosexual couples, all of them are the residents of St. Petersburg. They were asked to answer the questions of a complex of psychodiagnostic methods, relying on their own self-esteem, and then - on behalf of their spouse. Two “portraits” were made from the answers for each person. Comparison of the portraits allowed to calculate the level of perception difference for each couple and compare it with the level of satisfaction in marriage. The measures that were made: the level of satisfaction in marriage (“Satisfaction in marriage” by V.V. Stolin, T.L. Romanova, G.P. Butenko), the vision of the family (“Semantic differential”), the main resource (“The Main Resource” J.P. Flanders), types of attitude to the others (T. Leary Questionnaire). Results: the relationship between satisfaction in marriage and the vicinity of mutual representations has been revealed: the less the perception difference is, the higher is the level of satisfaction in marriage - for both women and men. Contrary to expectations, the results indicated that men tend to make closer images of their spouses than women. The results can be widely applied both in psychological counseling and further researches.
