The article is devoted to the study of gentleman figure, represented by the American writer Edith Wharton in the novels The House of Mirth, The Custom of the Country and The Age of Innocence. The aim of the study is to find out and research the specific features and peculiarities that characterized gentleman in the “old New York” society. The article’s author also attempts to define Edith Wharton’s attitude to the “old New York” traditions, customs and conventions that defined gentleman’s way of living in this society.
