Saprotrophic filamentous microfungi were isolated by means of the soil and ground dilution methods from samples collected from different locations of Antarctic. 32 samples from 8 locations were investigated. 439 isolates were recovered. Classical plating methods were applied to cultivate these fungi and to study their morphology. 23 taxa from 12 genera were isolated. The most of isolates were species from the genera Antarctomyces, Geomyces, Thelebolus and Phoma. The fungal isolates were identified and screened for their ability to grow at low temperatures. 16 %of isolates were determined as psychrophilic, 76 % of isolates - as psychrotrophic, and 8 % - as mesophilic. 27 isolates from different locations have been tested culturally for their fermentative activities (defined as levels of phospholipase, hemolytic, albumenize, catalase, cellulase and lignin destruction activities) and acid production as well as temperature tolerance. The width of fermentative reactions can be considered as adaptive potential of the Antarctic species.
